Membership

Membership in the Colonial Society was originally limited to descendants of Massachusetts Bay or Plymouth colonists but, since 1950, membership has been open to anyone interested in colonial Massachusetts. Resident Members of the Colonial Society, limited to 200 in number, live or work within 60 miles of Boston. Non-Resident and Honorary Members live at a greater distance.

Candidates for membership are proposed by Members of the Society and are elected by the Resident Members at the Colonial Society's Stated Meetings.  To nominate a candidate, two current Members should send letters and the candidate’s curriculum vita to Susan Lively, the chair of the Membership Committee, at 87 Mount Vernon St., Boston, MA 02108. The Council strongly encourages nominators to acquaint candidates with the history, objectives, and business of the Society before nominating them.
