V

THE LEAD MINES AT TANTIUSQUE

The materials that follow were not known or used by previous writers on seventeenth-century Massachusetts mining, who relied chiefly on George H. Haynes, “The Tale of Tantiusque: An Early Mining Venture in Massachusetts,” American Antiquarian Society, Proceedings, n.s., xiv (1900–1901), 471–497. Consequently, John Pynchon’s connection with the “project” from 28 October 1657 to August 1662 has never been worked out.

John Oldham, the fur trader, brought to Boston in 1633 some samples of a black substance from a deposit in a hill in the southern part of the present town of Sturbridge, long known to the natives as Tantiusque. The Bostonians called it black lead, although actually it was graphite. At the urging of Dr. Robert Child, then in England, John Winthrop, Jr., procured from the General Court of Massachusetts Bay in 1644 a grant of the land for ten miles around the hills containing black lead. William Pynchon of Springfield was in touch with Governor Winthrop’s prospector, Stephen Day, as early as October 8: “I tould the Indians also that the Governor [“mr Wintrop”] did send you to see what frindship they would shew you. I tould him also that they might safely Trust you for venison and Beanes, and wished them to let you have such things uppon Trust.” Pynchon also asked the Indians to assist Day in locating deposits of black lead and other metals.520

There is no evidence to link William Pynchon to the developing of the mines, or with William Paine and Thomas Clarke, both rich merchants of Boston, who seem to have financed John Winthrop, Jr., and helped to manage the enterprise when operations began late in 1644. The presence of the undependable Uncas and his Mohegans and some Narragansetts in the territory between Pequot (New London) and Tantiusque forestalled the opening of any path or route for the supplying of the miners or the carting away of heavy barrels of graphite. But by 28 October 1657, as the Account Books show, John Pynchon was playing a prominent part in providing labor for the mines, supplying provisions and other goods for the workers, and conveying the graphite to the Connecticut River at Springfield.

From the lead mines to Springfield was only about half as far as the distance to New London, and in many other respects the River Town suited the needs of the projectors best.521 Through the agency of John Pynchon, the mine manager, William Deine (Dean, Dennis?), procured such essential provisions as salt pork, bacon, pease, beans, corn, wheat, and cheese, and also tools, nails, and clothing. From Windsor, Springfield, Hadley, and Northampton John Pynchon recruited craftsmen and laborers and hired ox teams and carts.

William Pynchon died in England on 29 October 1662, and a year later his son went over to Buckinghamshire to settle the estate. He closed his shop and warehouse at Springfield during this absence, which explains the sudden end of his transactions at Tantiusque; and we are denied an explanation of why they were not renewed upon his return. Other activities such as increased civic duties, fur trading, and West India ventures may have absorbed all of his time. Perhaps, however, the explanation lies in the ups and downs of the operation of the graphite mines. The full tale of Tantiusque is yet to be told.
