CHECK-LIST OF BOSTON NEWSPAPERS

    1704–1780

    MARY FARWELL AYER

    NOTE.

Newspapers are entered in the Check-List under brief but descriptive titles. Under these titles they are always cited, unless otherwise specified.

The full title, the day of publication, and every change in title and in day of publication, are given in footnotes in the Check-List.

All dates, unless otherwise specified, are New Style. In Old Style the year began with March 25; in New Style, with January 1. The legal change in England and the American Colonies from Old Style to New Style took place in September, 1752. Previous to that date, in papers printed between January 1 and March 25, there was no fixed custom, some being dated according to Old Style, others according to New Style, and still others according to both Styles. New Style was adopted from the beginning in the New-England Weekly Journal (1727), in the Boston Evening-Post (1735), and in the Independent Advertiser (1748). The practice of other papers published before 1752 is stated in the Bibliographical Notes.

All dates are inclusive. Thus, 1704, April 24 — 1722, December 31, includes the issues of April 24, 1704, and of December 31, 1722, as well as all issues between those two dates.

All dates in the Check-List of which there are no known copies of papers are conjectural.

Errors in dates are recorded in footnotes in the Check-List.

Where two copies of the same issue have different numbers, the fact is recorded in footnotes in the Collation of Numbers and Dates.

Where a number is cut off, torn, mutilated, or unknown, no number is given in the Collation of Numbers and Dates.
