    FRANCIS NICHOLSON’S COMMISSION as LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR OF THE TERRITORY AND DOMINION OF NEW ENGLAND

    20 April, 1688

    20 APRIL 1686 COMMISSION TO CAPT NICHOLSON TO BE LT GOVR OF NEW ENGLAND

    James the Second, &c. To Our Trusty and Welbeloved Capt. Francis Nicholson Greeting.

    Whereas by Our Commission under Our Great Seal of England bearing date the 7th day of this instant Aprill, Wee have thought fit to Constitute and appoint Our Trusty and welbeloved Sr Edmund Andros Knt Our Capt. Generall and Governor in Cheif of Our Territory and Dominion of New England in America; And whereas Wee repose a Speciall Trust and Confidence in yor Loyalty Courage and circumspection, Wee do by these Presents Constitute and appoint you to be Our Lieutenant Governor of Our said Territory and Dominion of New England, To have, hold, exercise and enjoy the said Place and Office for and during Our Pleasure, with all Rights, Priviledges Profits and advantages to the same belonging & appertaining.

    And in Case of the death or absence of the Sr Edm. Andros Wee do hereby authorize and require you to Execute and perform all & singular the Powers and directions Conteined in Our said Commission to Sr Edmund Andros and such Instructions as Wee have already or hereafter shall from time to time send unto him, And you are to observe and follow such orders & directions as you shall receive from Us, the said Sr Edmund Andros, or any other Our Cheif Governor of Our said Territory and Dominion of New England for the time being. And Wee hereby Command all and singular Our Officers Ministers and Loving Subjects of Our said Territory and Dominion, and all others whom it may concern to take due Notice hereof, and to give their ready obedience accordingly. Given at Our Court at Whitehall the 20th day of Aprill 1688 in the 4th year of Our Reign.
