826 | To Philip Stephens

    Pall Mall. Feb. 12. 1770

    Sir,

I desire that you would inform the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty that before I left Boston I engaged Samuel Fitch Esqr to supply the Office of Advocate General then vacant by the Appointment of Jonathan Sewall Esqr to be Judge of the Court of Admiralty at Halifax. Since I have arrived in England, I have received a Letter from the Lieut Governor of the Province acquainting me that he has appointed Mr Fitch to hold that Office till their Lordship’s Pleasure shall be known. I must therefore beg Leave to recommend to their Lordships the sd Samuel Fitch to be appointed by them Advocate General of the Court of Admiralty at Boston. He is at the Head of the Bar there & one of those who have not appeared in the Opposition to Government. When I engaged him to act in this Office I considered him not only as the properest but allmost the only proper Person; & to my own Opinion of him, I can add the fullest Recommendation of the Lieut Governor, who, as Cheif Justice must be well acquainted with his Merit as a Lawyer.

    I am &c.

    Philip Stephens Esqr
