363 | To Cadwallader Colden

    Boston July 20th _ 1765_

    Sir.1

I hereby transmit to you a Copy of a resolution of the Council of this Province on a petition of Nicholas Whitmarsh & others complaining that they have been disturbed in their possessions lying within the bounds or reputed bounds of this Province; and earnestly request you that you will interpose your authority to prevent any force being used against the petitioners or any other possessors of Lands within this Province or it’s reputed bounds, as the Consequences of such proceedings may be very fatal. If Mr. Livingston2 is dissatisfied with the boundary of this Province as it is at present understood to be, and has had the sanction of a Report of the Board of Trade, He will do well to apply to the King in Council and not support his Claim against peaceable possessors by force, which is certainly illegal whatever his Claims may be and will most assuredly produce a defence of the same kind: for he cant suppose that a number of Landholders will Suffer themselves to be dispossessed by such means without making resistance to them.

I am with great Regard Sir Your most Obedt. hum: Servant

    Fra: Bernard
