248 Account of the Overseers’ Effort to Enlarge the Corporation

    [June 6 and 13 1722]

IX At a meeting of the Overseers held on the 6th of June 1722 on the memorial of Mr. Sever and Mr. Welstead two of the resident Tutors it was voted to apply to the General Court for an enlargement of the number of the fellows of the Corporation so as to take in the resident Tutors: and Judge Sewall, Col. Fitch, Col. Winthrop, Mr. Thatcher and Mr. Harris were appointed a Committee to draft a memorial to the General Court to grant an enlargement.

At a meeting of the Overseers held on June 13th 1722, the said Committee reported a draft of a memorial which was accepted and by that Committee presented to the General Court. It was read in the House who took no order on it because it was not signed by the Clerk of the Overseers. The Overseers then directed their Clerk to sign it and the memorial was again laid before the House. The Corporation did not consent to the alteration requested by the Overseers and the proposed enlargement was never made.
