390 Report of Stephen Gardner

    March 18, 1731/2

Mr. Stephen Gardner who formerly hired the College Lands at Narraghanset, tells me, that this day he paid the College Treasurer in full for the Rents of said Lands; but he was obliged by Lease, to clear and leave in fence, 50 Acres of said Farm; and he says, he did clear 60 Acres of it, and fenced the whole Farm; but that some of the Land which he cleared, is since grown over with young wood. He says, he believes for £5 the Land might yet be clear (and the Fence round, it put into tenantable repair) as the Lease requires, and he offers to give the College £5 if his Lease may be given up to him. Mr. Gardner says, the Land was so poor that he never had any benefit by it to answer his labour.
